Travelogue

My thoughts and feelings on Dress in the United States

Sharon Glickman, Business Image Consultant

The South

Although I have traveled the world for both business and pleasure, I can truly say that my experiences in the South have always been extremely rewarding. The southern women I have visited have always displayed a graciousness and gentleness that makes this Northerner feel right at home. I find Southern women have a strong interest in glamour and in looking fashionable at all times and in every place. Be it staying home, going to the office, or shopping at the mall, it seems that Southerners are always conscious of their image.

The Northeast

This is just my take on the South, now let's move to the Northeast. I find Northern women to be sharp, savvy, and to never miss a beat. Living in Washington, I find it's a longer day because of travel time to work. Darker colors are more in vogue, styles are more classic and conservative, and we see more suits in the office. The northern woman wants to fit in and dresses with colors that are more muted. She's not flashy or trendy, but is always business appropriate.

The Midwest

The Midwesterners are so welcoming and friendly and are more laid back and more casual in their dress. In a big city like Chicago with an eastern flair I find the fashions are closer to the east coast style but with not as much pressure to be as conservative. But outside the bigger cities I find a much more relaxed and understated atmosphere both at home and at work.

The West Coast

Now, let's get to the west coast with all of those free spirited and free thinking people. It seems in Northern California fashions can range from informal to business suits. When we go to southern California it is jeans, long skirts, and interesting tops - it seems anything goes! The styles are soft and casual. And the weather here is so nice there's no need to worry about coats, boots, scarves, or hats. Leave your snow shovels at home.

So what I try and do with my clients is take some southern charm, some northern savvy, some Midwestern friendliness, and some California free spirit and create the appropriate look for each person!
